My Journey with Pain
When I was 18 I injured my back performing a Fireman's Carry (during a training exercise) incorrectly. That came back to haunt me 2 years later while stretching out on a stability ball. Fortunately I was already in school for massage and had the muscle awareness and technique foundations to get myself up off the floor after my back seized. It took close to three hours before I could stand again.
Since then I have gone through 2 auto accidents; T-boned once when a driver ran a red light and rear-ended when another driver failed to stop for a red light (seriously folks, please pay attention out there). In many ways my own journey has led my path of study. I learn about the interconnectedness of our body and how to manipulate the muscles, fascia, and nervous system to improve the system as a whole.
Today, I'm 36 years old and have less pain than many of my friends who have never had active injuries. While I believe there is a time and place for pain meds and surgeries, I think we can all agree that avoiding them is best. Mobilizing our soft tissues and strengthening our muscles are critical foundations to pain free life with easy movement.
While someone can certainly pay for a massage therapist and personal trainer, I understand that many people don't have the resources to cover these services. That's why I've made it a personal goal to manage as much of my self-care on my own and from my home. To build a system other people can follow to care for themselves when they don't have the time or money to schedule appointments with a professional.
